Overalls
Yes, I am advocating for the overall, but this isn't your fluffy haired, tracksuit jacket wearing 90s version. Instead, as Refinery29’s fashion team suggests, the type I'm referring to is a tad more grown-up. Let's face it, the ease of overalls, essentially denim onesies for adults, just can't be beat, so why not pick a pair wisely and incorporate them into your wardrobe. Choose a super chic retro version in a dark wash with a flare leg, or opt for something a little edgier and laid back with a skinny leg with lots of distressing. For summer, pair them with your favorite bandeau top, aviators, and sandals. For fall, try pairing with your favorite plaid flannel, beanie, and combat boots.
Shirt Dress
There aren't many wardrobe staples more perfect than the shirt dress. This versatile little piece looks simple to the naked eye, but actually packs a massive style punch thanks to some strategic accessorizing. Start with a short sleeve shirt dress in the color of your choosing and pair it with a cute pair of gladiator sandals, belt the waist, toss on a sun hat, and — ta-da! — you've got a super cute, super simple summer outfit. When fall rolls around, take this same dress and pair it with tights, faux suede booties, a baseball cap, and tie your favorite flannel around the waist.
Mules
If you buy a pair of mules they will definitely be a workhorse in your wardrobe. POPSUGAR's style savvy crew has this trend on lock, and so should you! Pick a neutral pair that will go with a variety of outfits. I like a tan, beige, black, two-tone, or some color along those lines. Opt for a taller block heel to really elongate the leg and help to bring this style into the modern realm of fashion. Wear these with dresses, shorts, skirts, and even rompers throughout the summer, and with skinny jeans and sweaters in the fall.
Basic Tops
Summer is all about light clothing, while fall is all about the layers, so don't relegate your tanks, tops, and tees to the back of your closet just yet. Lyst's editorial staff loves the versatility a basic, well fitting top can lend to an outfit. Whether short or long sleeved, take advantage of these essentials. In the summer, tuck your favorite oversized tee into a cute pair of frayed shorts and sandals with a statement necklace and sun hat. For fall, pair your slouchy tee with a blazer, distressed skinny jeans, heels, and a fedora. These are also perfect tucked into maxi skirts or layered beneath warm flannels and scarves.
I hope you've enjoyed my tips for easing into fall with some of the pieces you may already have on hand. With so many easy ways to carry over without a lot of fuss, I believe everyone can bring a little bit of summer into the next season. Here's wishing you a smooth and stylish transition!
